Being an owner/stylist has more responsibilities, but is it more rewarding?
Yes, it's gratifying if you understand you have to be a leader first then a salon owner. Just saying you the boss means you pay all the bills, but assuming you're a leader means you're leading people somewhere.
What sets you apart from other masterhairstylists/educators?
Well, for one, I'm a Barber that slipped into the hair world. Second, I am more passionate about helping others than doing hair. Being a servant sets me apart.
What is your goal as an educator?
One of my goals is to educate anyone that will listen to me about hair loss. There is an epidemic in the African American community called Traction Alopecia and a lot of scalp disorders.
What are your long term career goals?
My long term career goal is to teach financial literacy to our youth. I'm in school now for Real Estate and CFP. In hopes to save the next generation from financial ruins.
Is there anyone in the industry that inspires you to dream bigger? If so who and why?
Annie Minerva Turbo-Malone, the lady that started it all. If we can get back to some of her qualities of developing people and making them understand that we need to take the stairs and not the elevator.
What are your most and least favorite hair trends today?
Tight braids and Lace fronts that's installed wrong.
Obviously you understand the importance of social media. What's something every hair professional should use social media for?
Social media is a tool when used for the right reason, I believe it gives us a leg up, but it also spoils us and allows us to hide behind our phones. I still go out and network, I love person to person marketing.
What's the one thing that you feel is key to building a brand?
Consistency, showing up every day even when you don't want to.
We're all for diversity, but hair seems to be the one area where the majority of people still goes to someone who looks like them for services. How important are salons/barbershops to the Black Community?
We all know that beauty and barbershops are the pillars of our community. Women and men alike spend their first fruits in our businesses.
What failure/mistake turned out to be your biggest lesson/blessing?
Having my kids at a very young age, not a failure but so many blessings and a lot of lessons.
Is there anything else you would like to share with me?
I think you about covered it all. I want to say thank you for what you bring to the industry; you are indeed a beam of light. I thank you and love you.
