What is Groom Theory?
By definition, when I first created "Groom Theory" two years ago, it was; "when your personal groomer, takes the necessary steps, to transform you in away that has you feeling like you can conquer any challenge life throws at you." Since then it has evolved to something much more, its not all about the haircut, even though it plays a big part when it comes to confidence, but it's more about the total look, meaning when your body looks good (physically), when your pockets are full (financially), and when your dressed uniquely to fit your style (fashion). Then and there, I feel like you can become who ever you want in this life. That's what Groom Theory means!
What advice would you give to aspiring barbers trying to build a clientele?
You have to brand and constantly advertise yourself, take advantage of the free advertising when it comes. Social media, keep business cards on you and get out there and meet and build relationships. It seems like everybody cuts hair now a days, so you want to build something that separates you from the rest ( branding).
What sets you apart from other barbers?
I feel like its my customer service, since I work by an appointment only base system. I'm able to focus on detailing, that makes my clients feel more like family instead of a dollar sign.
How long have you been a barber?
I've been cutting hair since I was 15 years old and I'm 28 now. I became a barber student in 2008, professional barber since 2010.
We've seen the "straight razor shape-up" attract Black men to other races for barbering. What are your thoughts on this?
That just means we have to step our game up, I call it re-inventing!
What do you think about the surge in female barbers?
I think its a great thing! Always a good to see talented women get the recognition they deserve.
What are your must have tools and products?
Tools: Wahl detailers & Oyster fast feeds Products: Sam Lameer shave gel & Frederick Benjamin grooming products.
How important is social media to the barber industry?
It's huge! It has been a game changer, it gives barbers a chance to be seen all over the world. Not only that, but a great opportunity to network and build relationships with other professionals in our industry.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see multiple locations of "Groom Theory Lounges" and possibly a barber school.
