What's the one thing that you feel is key to building a brand?
The key to building a brand involves several factors. First, decide what your specialty is and build on that. Always do your best at all times. Do photo shoots and enter competitions/shows to get your name out there. Social media is free marketing….use it! Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are great platforms to advertise your brand but make sure you can back it up. Build your brand on a solid foundation and not just hype. Make sure you are keeping up with your specialty by going to classes and conferences to hone your skills.
What sets you apart from other stylists?
I am an innovator.
Do you specialize in any particular service?
My specialty is haircutting.
When did you know you wanted to be a hairstylist?
I did not decide to be a hairstylist until I was 31 years old. I knew it was my calling because I loved creating and interacting with people.
What products and tools are the salon's must haves?
Products are what keep your customers coming back. You must have great shampoos, conditioners, setting agents, relaxer, color for your chemical color clients, and finishing products. You must have great shears for those haircuts (buy 2 in case something happens to one pair).
What advice would you give a hairstylist who wants to open their own salon?
You definitely need a business plan together and understand what you are getting into.
How has being a platform artist helped you?
It has propelled my career to new heights by allowing exposure not just on a local level but across the country. I get booked for classes, I am able to promote my educational DVDs, and I get new clientele when people move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
