Bliss Curls seem to have catapulted Colette Atlanta's Master Stylist to the forefront of the industry. How long have you been doing hair?
I have been doing hair professionally for almost 20 years.
How did Bliss Curls come about? When did you know it was something special?
I started doing bliss curls in 2010 when my partner and I opened Salon Bliss, I saw her doing the technique on long hair so I decided to do it on short hair and it was cute but last year I decided to put a little spin on the technique and everyone loved it! I knew it was something special when other stylist that I admired started asking me about the bliss curls.
How does it feel to be responsible for one of the hottest looks in the hair industry today?
I am very appreciative that the industry was very acceptive of the new trend.
Obviously you understand the importance of social media. What's something
every hair professional should use social media for?
I believe that every stylist should take advantage of social media and its massive audience to advertise and network because its the new way to market your business.
Congratulations on the success of your Bliss Curls tutorial DVD. What do you think about the licensed professionals who post their tutorials on Youtube?
I feel that we give away to many of our techniques to the wrong audience. It's really destroying the industry because any unlicensed Jane Doe can go to Youtube and learn how to do any style or learn almost any technique.
Who in the industry inspires you?
I am inspired by the industry in its entirety, because everyone is so creative and eager to learn new techniques. It pushes me to tunnel into my creative side and come up with new trends.
What's your best advice on building and keeping a clientele?
I still believe that word of mouth is the best way to build clientele. Good referrals from existing clients will help bring in new clients. Give your existing client a thank you service like a free trim or a conditioning treatment as an incentive to refer more clients. With that being said, Social Media is becoming the new word of mouth, because most people will read a status, tweet, or Instagram message before they have a conversation with someone. Ask your clients to refer you on there as well. The best way to keep your clientele is to be persistent. Your quality of work is what is going to keep them coming back.
Do you agree with specializing in one thing or believe that stylists should do everything?
I believe that every stylist should do what they feel comfortable doing. When you are comfortable doing something the end result turns out much better. A stylist should know the basic fundamentals of hairstyling and of haircare to be a well rounded stylist.
What's next for Colette?
I am working on my next dvd and I also have two classes coming up because I have so much that I would like to share with the industry.
